The “I Am More” exhibit offers a well-rounded perspective on some of the most important issues surrounding oppression in today’s society. Topics such as race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and income inequality present an all-inclusive look into the comprehensive issue of oppression in the 21st century. The narrative icenters around stories from past and present events covering topics such as social, pop-culture, sports, and institution based occurrences of oppression.
An important point of the experience is to encourage actions that viewers can take in every day, small ways, to combat oppression, bigotry and hate. The narrative teaches those who have certain implied privileges in life to become ally’s for those who do not. Though many of the topics shared are rather overwhelming, the lasting idea is that taking a stance on a small everyday level is the first and most important step for us to work together to conquer the enormity of oppression.
The ‘I Am More’ exhibit was created by a collaboration of graphic and interior design students in a special topics class called ‘Exhibit Design’ led by Professor Andy Schwanbeck. The effort also worked to collaborate with LRX Director, Professor Jane Arnold to feature content/curriculum that served the LRX: 1002 Diversity and Discrimination course.
The exhibit is open now through February 12th in the Cantellops Art Gallery.
