In addition to the foundation courses, the first year of Interior Design courses introduces the basic communication skills of architectural drafting, both manual and computer-generated, along with freehand sketching. Students learn to communicate their designs through floor plans, elevations, sections, axonometric and perspective drawings and basic model-making skills. Students are also introduced to concept development and the design process and their roles in identifying and exploring complex problems to generate creative design solutions. Project research becomes an integral part of the design process during the first year, focusing on the theory and practices of human behavior and how people interact with the built environment, along with knowledge of ergonomics and anthropometrics.
